Art is more than a passion to me. It is absolutely essential. Life needs art, just as art needs life. I feel so much joy when I am finished with a painting, because it is easier for me to express myself on canvas, rather than in person. It has been both an escape and a savior at the same time.

My artwork is not about technicality, or precise anatomy—it is about conveying pure emotion. With each mood or experience, the media as well as subject matter will change. The paintings always start with a dream or memory that has been exaggerated by emotion. My goal is to evoke within the viewer the same feeling that I had during the creation of the piece, while presenting a surreal visual vocabulary that is unique, and calls for new associations.

I could never be a flat-out realist. I have immense respect for those who are able to paint photo-realistically, but I believe that art is a special gift. Art gives you the freedom to bend reality, to make dreams come true, and to scream out your insides to the world. I don’t ever hide things in my art. If it is an ugly emotion I am experiencing, I enjoy showing it through my paintings.

More recently, I have made the journey from dark to light. Older subject matter was very foreboding and grim, with cooler tones. Lately I have been painting happier scenes with brighter color and more fluid movement. While I am enjoying this new use of color and subject matter, my artwork seems to keep the ironic undertones that is typical of my older work. I look forward to further exploring both light and dark subject matter, for I feel that there is a duality within each of us that needs to be expressed. It’s what makes us human. Ultimately, both sides are the driving forces behind my creations.
